Exactly - seeing the "real thing" wouldn't be particularly exciting.
What IS tragically missing from existence in the present is a
recording of the phone conversation I had with Bill soon after the
incident occurred. I could SWEAR that what he told me then conflicted
with the story that's now "on the books" but my memory is far too poor
to say what precisely he DID tell me.
The real sad thing is, I would've had a recorder set up when I called,
except that I didn't expect to be talking to Bill. I called his
manager to ask about the Letterman fiasco, expecting to either get a
quick quote or set up a time to talk to Bill later. Instead, as soon
as I told her why I was calling, she said "Bill's in the office - I'll
let HIM tell you about it!"
My notes are long gone, and the brief excerpt that saw print predates
the AusChron's online archives.
