They discovered it was more profitable to switch you without your
consent, assign you to an absurdly high rate plan, then threaten to
ruin your credit rating if you don't pay their extortionate bill.

Them some discovered that they didn't even need to provide any service
at all.  They could just start pestering you for imaginary unpaid
phone bills.  Google on "AFNI," for instance.  It's the perfect
provider if you don't want any actual telephone service, but just
want to pay large bills.
