DSL and cable are both "faster connections" in the way your son is
thinking
of. "Wireless" has to do with the internal details of your network - how
your computer connects to the company's DSL/cable modem - rather than with
the speed at which the company lets you access the Net; it's a sales
buzzword,
essentially, for cases like yours where you're not concerned about it.
All of them give you pretty much an open connection to the Internet, so
that
once you're connected you can use your web browser, play your games,
connect
to your online ISP, etc., pretty much like you do over dialup after
dialing
in and connecting. They're not limited to "you can only do stuff over the
Web"
- again, that's the salesperson not knowing enough about what the customer
is
interested in.

You've mentioned MCI and Sprint. You're posting through Earthlink, and at
least in my area they offer DSL, and I've been using it mostly
satisfactorily
for a few years now; they were cheaper than the BellSouth offering, and
way
cheaper than ComCast (who wanted to charge MORE for "just cable internet"
than for 'cable TV plus internet too', sigh). Try Googling on <your city>
+ DSL and see what pops up; doing so for me shows Verizon's in the biz
here
too, plus starts the list off with a few Lists Of Knoxville DSL
Providers...

Heh. There's enough competition now that it's no longer profitable, I
think.
(Plus they're ALL worried to death about VoIP and cellphones...) I'm
thinking
it's been replaced by "hey! you! come over to OUR cellphone service! Look,
colors!".
